Tips for relief of Heartburn

1. Lose weight

Being overweight is not helpful for heartburn

Being overweight can affect your heartburn in more than one way.  From a physical point of view, it should be clear that the additional weight pressing on the stomach will inevitably cause more acid to be released into the esophagus, with unavoidable result of heartburn.

Additionally, in most cases, being overweight is an indication that overall, a better diet is something that you could be aiming for.

2. Eat less, more often

When you eat a large meal, your body has more difficulty in digesting it, and has to work harder.  In order to do this, it produces more acid to deal with the task at hand, and as a result, there is more acid present in your stomach, increasing the likelihood that it will be released into the esophagus.

So, avoid large meals.  Eat a smaller portion 6 times per day instead of a larger potion 3 times per day.

3. Soup Salad and Sandwich for dinner

Cut down on spicy foods

Following on from the above tip, it’s best to avoid eating spicy foods for dinner, or as your last meal at night.  Chili, peppers, curries and hot spices are out.

It is always preferable to eat something light as your last meal, which will give your body the best opportunity to break it down.

4. Maintain good posture during and after eating

Just staying upright may seem like very simplistic advice, but it is very worthy.  Maintaining good posture will allow gravity do what it does best, and restrict the flow of acid up into the esophagus.

As much as this is true while you are eating, it is even more important after you eat.  Many of us are in the habit of relaxing by slouching on the sofa, or even lying down after a meal.  This just makes it easier for acid to escape into the esophagus.

5. Drink water instead of carbonated drinks

Drink plenty of water

Water is helpful for diluting the acid in your stomach.  Next time you feel your symptoms coming on, drink 2 glasses of water.  This is all the more effective if you add baking soda to the water, as baking soda can help neutralise the acid.  In times gone past, our ancestors chewed on chalk, which is sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and also forms the basis for taking antacid for relief of heartburn.  People who are on a limited salt diet should avoid taking baking soda.

Water is far preferable to drinking carbonated drinks, which produce more gas in the body, resulting in more pressure on the stomach, with the inevitable consequences.
