People have been asking how to cure heartburn since time immemorial.  Generations have suffered the burning sensation from behind the breastbone all the way up to the throat and neck.  That horrible bitter and sour taste coming up into your mouth and causing you to gag – it’s not pleasant, it can disrupt your life and can ultimately be a right royal pain (pun intended!).  Down through the ages we have wrestled with the question of what to do about it, and some of the same remedies and solutions that we came up with, are some of the very same ones that are effective today.  This website hopes to answer some of those questions and give some tips and advice.  But first…


What is Heartburn?

Heartburn (sometimes called pyrosis or acid indigestion) is the common name for a condition that in over 99% of cases has absolutely nothing to do with the heart! 

It is a symptom of acid reflux, although the two terms are often used interchangeably.  Acid reflux is when stomach acid escapes or is forced out of the stomach and up into the esophagus.  It is this acid which causes the burning sensation and bitter taste.  Heartburn can also be a symptom of GERD, Hiatal Hernia, or even esophagal cancer.  Anyone can suffer from heartburn, but it is often more pronounced in people who are overweight, or also in pregnant women.


What causes Heartburn?

As I pointed out above, heartburn is the name of the symptom, rather than the condition, so perhaps it is worth asking “What causes acid reflux?”  Acid reflux can be caused by a number of different factors, but chief among them is diet/food and lifestyle.

As shown in the video, there is a “valve” situated just above the stomach that allows food to enter the stomach in a regulated manner.  This valve is called the Lower Esophegal Sphincter, or LES.  If for any reason, the LES becomes relaxed, it can allow acid to be released from the stomach and let it escape up into the esophagus, with the inevitable results.  There are many reasons why the LES becomes relaxed.  Some foods can cause it, such as chocolate (what a drag!), some drinks such as coffee, and even smoking has been shown to relax the LES.

How to cure heartburn.

In many cases, heartburn can be relieved by following a few good tips and watching what we eat and drink.  However, if you suffer from chronic or severe heartburn, on a regular basis, then it is something that you should take a little more seriously.  Frequent, severe heartburn symptoms can often be an indication of an underlying condition that should be investigated.  When your condition is this bad, a couple of antacid tablets are not going to help much.  You need to take a holistic approach to curing your heartburnFollowing a course will involve making changes to your diet and lifestyle, but with a little time and effort, you too can wave goodbye to heartburn!
